More than a century has passed since A.P. Chekhov died, which allows us to examine the reception of his works as a process, and highlight the main achievements that have contributed to the preservation and constant renewal of his legacy. Researchers of his lifework can now attempt to understand what factors have motivated the constant presence of the writer’s work on the book market and in various artistic media, as well as to explore how different national cultures have sought to understand themselves through Chekhov’s texts, and what strategies of interpretation have been adopted in different historical periods. Accordingly, the international conference – dedicated to the 120th anniversary of A.P. Chekhov’s death – organised at the University of Debrecen between 15–17 July 2024, addressed peculiarities of Chekhov’s reception in certain regions of Europe, literary criticism, problems of translation, theatrical, cinematic and musical interpretations, as well as issues related to creative reception. This volume contains edited versions of presentations delivered at the conference.
